The clubs memory is, regretfully, a bit vague on the history of how it first started but recent information suggests that Croydon Rifle Club, as it first started out as, existed before the second World War and that one or two Home Guard platoons, possibly mainly of Croydon Council employees, were raised from the membership. However, the records that we have, only date from after the Home Guard was 'Stood Down' in 1944. At this time Croydon Rifle Club was first based in the car park situated under a building which was demolished in 1962 to make way for the Fairfield Halls. The club then moved to Jessops Way where the council made available a large area and the range was finally opened in 1966. The berms were made by excavated earth from the flyover in the town centre and the Full-Bore Pistol range was completed in 1985. If anyone has any more history on the club, please e-mail it to me at the webmaster address below.
